SEO stands for:
Search
Engine
Optimization.
The actual SEO definition is probably less important than what it could mean for your business, and your competitors business if you decide to engage in Search Engine Optimization. Back in the day, the SEO definition was simple; optimize a webpage using specific guidelines and tricks to have a specific keyword term rank high in search engine results.
Example, Bizsheet.com specializes in online business promotion, so we would want "online business promotion" to appear on the first page of Google when we searched for that term.
So here's how you used to optimize for "online business promotion".
Here is the old SEO definition
Put the keyword term in the page title tag
Put the keyword term in the title of the page in the h1 tag
Generously pepper your content on that page with that term, but not too much - maybe 10 occurrences
Link to your page on your own site with the "online business promotion" term in the link(a href tag)
Get links to your page form outside sources using the same guidelines as the point above
Submit your website to as many search engines as possible
Keep submitting every week
Swap links with random companies! Weeeeee!
Pay folks in India to add links to you page from all over web

So what's different in the new SEO definition that wasn't applicable 10 years ago?
The first 5 points above are still a good starting point for building well ranking content
It is increasingly important which sites link to you - each site has a rank. Higher is better. New york times, good - mommas home made squirrel pie, not so good (relevancy is also important)
A few well respected links to your content will do wonders / before it was a numbers game
We focus on a few search engines now; Google, Bing, Yahoo, DMOZ
Quality content - because in the end you want readers too, not just search results
An active site with new articles, blogs and content regularly added will increase your ranking.
New streams of revenue - looking beyond banner ads. Now there is Adsense, Ad networks, ad placements, sponsored content and on and on
Consistency and quality. How long have you been around and what is the quality of your site like? It all plays into how well you will rank
Social media. It's like the Government - it's big and can be annoying, but you would be foolish to ignore it. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and the rest can add some real glue to your links
Add some other voices to your site- variety is the spice of life. It's also the sign of an active engaged site.
There is no end, never stop. When you stop updating, Google thinks less of you.
